06.06.2017 A Conference on “Modern Development of International Investment Arbitration” took place in Moscow on May 22 and 23, 2017

Modern Development of International Investment Arbitration, a conference focused on issues of international economic rights, was held in Moscow on May 22 and 23, 2017.  The Conference was hosted by Moscow State University’s Collège Universitaire Français and Law Faculty, along with support from the Institute for Law and Public Policy.

The Conference included presentations from Russian and French researchers, as well as from practicing lawyers specializing in international economic rights.  According to the organizers of the Conference, the purpose of the event was to bring together both academic and practical legal approaches in fields related to economic relations between France and Russia.

The relevance of the Conference’s topic was confirmed by the fact that, despite the benefits of international arbitrage, there are many legal difficulties connected with the given method of regulating disputes.  An example of influence on the national legal systems of states involved in arbitration is the case of YUKOS, which was considered by the Conference.

In its judgements from September 20, 2011, and July 31, 2014, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia encroached on rights and liberties that are guaranteed by the European Convention of Human Rights.  Russia was also forced to pay significant monetary compensation to former shareholders of YUKOS as a result of the decision of an international arbitration court from July 18, 2014, in the case of Yukons Universal Limited.  However, this decision was annulled by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague on April 20, 2016.
